Why are we so angry all the time?
We’ve turned sports into a rage fueled, spiteful hatefest and I for one am sick and tired of it.
When did it become more about who you hate than it was about who you love?
When did you decide your rival losing was more important than your team winning?
Look, I have a long list of teams on my sports hate list (Yankees, Clemson, Jets to name a few), but I don’t go out of my way to celebrate their demise. I won’t deny that I hope they don’t win championships, but who in their right mind wants to see the other guys celebrate winning while your guys are at home? Nobody.
That being said, I can honestly say that I will in no way, shape or form celebrate a downfall like I’ve personally gained something from it.
This is sports guys. It’s supposed to be fun. It’s supposed to be about catching a game with your family or friends, knocking back a few beers and watching the team you love compete for your admiration….and loads of money…
This isn’t how it is in 2015.
We run a 24-hour news cycle based on nothing but pure hatred.
We celebrate legends falling like we had something to do with it. We jump to conclusions on accusations without any facts, just because the person in question plays for a team we hate.
All of this is bad…really really bad. We are a society that hates first, and we hate over something as simple as sports. Something we aren’t even playing as fans, but we have to fight over anyway.
LeBron James is probably the most hated man in the NBA to the general public…and not one person has a legitimate reason to purely hate the man. You can throw “The Decision” around and make up your silly “had to leave to win” nonsense…but there’s really no actual reason you hate LeBron James, be honest.
He’s the model citizen in sports. He doesn’t get arrested, he doesn’t get accused of things, he never does stupid stuff on social media or in public when surrounded by cameras. He plays ball, trains and takes care of his family and his community.
In a time where we see the majority of the major sports websites headlines filling up with arrest after arrest, why do we hate the guy who does nothing wrong?
Because it’s easy.
He doesn’t play for YOUR team, so he sucks. He made a choice every single one of you would make to better his career, chasing wins…not money…but still he’s the bad guy.
“But he gets all the calls.” So what? So did Kobe, MJ, Magic and Bird. Stars get the calls, but you want to hate…because that is what we have become as sports fans in 2015.
A hate first society.
I’m not telling you that you have to like LBJ or any other athlete or team, but as my Mother always told me, “hate is a strong word.” So dislike players and teams, but don’t be a jerk about it and elevate it to hate.
It’s time to make a change ladies and gentlemen, and I am here to make my decree.
Sports fans everywhere UNITE! Join me in ending this ridiculousness. Root for your team and not against others. Celebrate your teams success and not the failures of others. Support your team when they win titles and when they finish in dead last.
We can do this….we have before.
P.S. Don’t get the use of “hate” in this piece confused with the obnoxiously overused and usually misused “hater” that gets tossed around social media…there’s a difference. Not to mention, most labeled “hater” are only labeled so after a debate is won…by them.
P.P.S. Thank you all for reading and supporting this! I am open to any and all feedback, hit me up with any comments on Twitter (@Ditti33) or via e-mail (firstname.lastname@example.org)
