Trade Deadline

Written for at 7 am on July 31, 2015.

First and foremost, the video above is pretty interesting if you want to see some stats on what impact trade deadline deals have on pennant races.

Now to the glorious day that is MLB Trade Deadline Day!

This is one of my favorite days of the year, usually, because the hot stove reaches far beyond the boiling point and makes for a very long, entertaining day of Twitter following.  This also marks exactly three years to the day that I first cracked the mic as a radio professional…so there’s that too!

Seriously though, for a baseball guy (or gal) this day is rumor Christmas.

The erroneous reports usually upset me, but in this case I love them. This is mainly because they’re rarely reported as fact until verified, so it’s a speculation for conversation…and man I can’t get enough.

The thing that could hurt my July 31st joy is that fact that so many massive trades have already happened these past two weeks.

Kazmir to Houston, Price and Tulo to Toronto, Cueto to KC and more. It’s been an amazing lead-up to today…and we still have until 4 pm today to see more happen.

So, as “Professor Baseball” I am hear to tell you the best trade of the past two weeks, and make a few predictions of what may happen today.

Best Move of 2015 (so far):

Scott Kazmir.

Yes, I know that the Royals getting an ace was a big deal, that Toronto making HUGE trades for Price and Tulo also makes them my new favorite to win the AL East…but Kazmir is the golden ticket for Houston.

I’ve been a fan of this guy since he was in Tampa…always wanted to see him in Boston honestly, but that’s another rant for another day.

Houston had been struggling heading into the All-Star break and fell behind the Angels out West.  That has now changed thanks to the ‘Stros sweeping the Angels this week, capped off by a masterful performance from Kazmir and a walk off for the home fans.

Kazmir doesn’t have to be the ace, he just makes an already solid rotation that much better. He brings a veteran presence to a young staff and having that heading into the playoffs with a team that hasn’t ever been there is a big big deal.

Besides the Kazmir deal I say Toronto, KC and now San Francisco have won this week.

Predictions on Deadline Day:

– The Blue Jays aren’t done.

I’ve heard some rumblings that the Jays are still looking to bolster their bullpen, even the name Aroldis Chapman being bandied about.  If this is true, the Jays immediately become my pick to win the AL East.  The Yankees are having injury woes again, and the division is ripe for the picking.

I see the Jays making more moves, and making sure they’re finally on the right path to the post season for the first time in 22 years.

– The Red Sox will sell big today.

This team is pathetic this season, a lot of money was spent on guys that have not panned out.  I see the entire roster being available, but guys like Mike Napoli, Joe Kelly, Jackie Bradley Jr and Brock Holt could definitely be on the move.  As an admitted Sox fan, I want it to be Hanley and Panda heading out…but doubt it due to money.

– The Yankees will swing and miss.

This isn’t a spiteful opinion, it’s just a harsh reality.  Brian Cashman has done a great job of trying to rebuild the farm system for the Yankees, a system that was stripped clean over the past 15 years in interest of trading for big names over and over.

That doesn’t mean it’s stacked deep enough for the Yankees to be willing to dump any prospects on another big name.  Because of this, it’ll be tough for the pinstripes to land any major stars today.  I do however think the trade for Dustin Ackley was a good trade both for now and the future.

– There will be one three or four team deal that blows the roof off baseball.

I don’t know what it is, I don’t know who will be involved.  I just have a feeling that this non-stop week of trades has been building up to something huge.  Maybe it’ll have to do with my Red Sox selling prediction.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the show because as I said before…this is the most entertaining day of speculation of the year!
