I hate having to do this, but I must. Everybody take a deep breath, relax and wait to see what I have to say before attacking me.
Tim Tebow is currently 7/45 with 2 HR and a .154 batting average for the New York Mets’ Low-A club the Columbia Fireflies…and he’s having the time of his life.
As a college student and die-hard fan of the South Carolina Gamecocks, I rarely said anything nice about Tebow. I wanted the other shoe to drop and the truth to come out that he was indeed a phony, as so many others continue to want today.
Instead I found out that he’s not a phony.
The great man you see portrayed in the endless coverage of his life and athletic pursuits is exactly the man Tebow apparently is. I’ve yet to find a single person that has met him (including FSU fans) that will say anything negative about him. In fact, a lot of his rival fans begrudgingly admit that the man is as pure as he is portrayed as being.
This, however, does not mean that I or anybody else has to bend reality to appease the folks that think that he also might walk on water.
As is the case with politics there are good fans and bad fans in sports. Usually the bad fans are the ones that act like morons and embarrass themselves and their fan bases. There is another type of bad fan though…the fan that denies reality.
There are a number of examples of these types of fans in recent history. To them I offer the following statements:
- Tom Brady is in fact GOAT
- LeBron James is not the only guy getting calls in the NBA
- Tim Tebow is not and never will be a legitimate prospect for Major League Baseball
These are facts, but facts that people are willing to yell at you to dispute. Facts that people get so angry about that they call sports talk radio shows and scream at hosts for pointing them out.
It needs to stop.
What makes Tim Tebow annoying to people in 2017 has nothing to do with him, his religion or his endless pursuit of his dreams….it is the fans that won’t accept the reality of the situation.
Don’t get me wrong, disagree with my or any other baseball talking head’s legitimate baseball analysis all you want…but do so with facts, not the following types of responses:
- “It doesn’t matter if he hits, he’s popular”
- “You’re just a hater”
These are asinine.
First off, it always matters if you hit in baseball. Sure you can find guys that hit around the Mendoza line in the Show, but if you check their minor league stats, they raked their way to the top.
A good example of that is former Gamecock, Jackie Bradley Jr. of the Boston Red Sox.
Last season he finally hit his stride in Boston, but in prior years he struggled to hit in the big leagues. He was sent down to AAA and returned to hitting the ball very well and was given another crack at the Show.
Hitting below the Mendoza line in Low-A is not going to give anybody chances at the show and with Tebow, it shouldn’t matter. Especially to his biggest supporters.
He’s having the time of his life in Columbia. He’s getting paid to play baseball (my personal dream). He’s doing what he wants.
Be happy for him and leave it there. If he advances, good for him…if not…good for him.
I’ve said it a million times, but I’ll say it again. The annoyance has nothing to do with Tim Tebow. I do not hate Tim Tebow and as a Christian myself I have no issue with his religion. He is exactly the man that he is portrayed as being and more of our country should be like him in these tumultuous times.
He’s just not a baseball player.
